If you are an Adrenaline-Lover, here’s something for you!
Some of the most thrilling activities you may have seen on TV may not be easily accessible depending on the country you live in. Lucky enough, if you are in Mauritius, this may be your chance to try something completely new!
Located at Le Morne, a tiny fishermen village on the South-western coast of Mauritius, Hang Loose Tours is an IKO Kite Centre which provides kitesurfing lessons, equipment rental, surf lessons as well as bike rental and tours to help you make the most of your holidays on the island. If you’ve always dreamt of being a Master of the Elements, here’s what you need to do.
How to get there
It took us approximately 50 minutes by car to reach Le Morne from Capital City Port-Louis. To get to the centre, you’ll have to drive past Riu Le Morne hotel and take the little bumpy road on your left. Once you reach the beach, you'll find plenty of kitesurfers riding the waves.
Learn Kite-surfing Basics 1-0-1!
The spot very much looks like it was built for this exciting water sports. The weather was cloudy and windy on the day of our visit - These were the perfect conditions for our first lesson with Federica, one of the IKO certified instructors of Hang Loose Tours.
With a huge smile on her face, she gave us a quick explanation about the Discovery program, which is a one-day course which covers the basics of kitesurfing and highlights all the safety measures before we set off to the beach. You may also be asked to sign a waiver form and write down your details before starting.
Good things come to those who wait, they say. So don’t be too disappointed if you don’t actually get to ride a wave on your first lesson day. Depending on your ability to grasp the basics of Kite-surfing, you may quickly get the chance to kick off your first try!
Once on the beach, Federica patiently set up the kite for us and gave us instructions about our posture and how to position ourselves according to the direction of the wind. The kite is made up of a kite canopy which is attached to a control bar.
The bar has 2 back lines, found at both ends, 2 front lines, which are connected to a depower system, and the chicken loop, a safety feature that allows kite-surfers to connect to their kite and quickly detach from it in case of an emergency.
We started with a kite smaller than the standard size. The goal of this exercise was to get the feel of the wind, to control it and to manoeuver the kite. It did take us a while to get the hang of it but according to Federica, a bigger weight requires a bigger kite.
After half an hour of practice, she set up a bigger one which required other safety measures. There were 3 of them. It always looks simpler in videos so we were quite happy that our Instructor spent so much time to carefully walk us through every important technique!
Federica showed us how to make figure-eight loops while steering from right to left - And that was pretty fun! Once you get a hold of how the wind works with the kite and vice-versa, you’ll get that "Hang Loose" attitude.
What courses can you try?
The discovery day lasted 2,5 hours and costs 110€ per person in a semi-private format. According to Federica you need between 7,5 to 10 hours program (the equivalent of 3 to 4 days course) before getting up on the board and make your first rides upwind.
If you’re only here for a short while, we would still recommend you give it a try - That will be a good excuse to come back! And if you’re an expat or local, here’s your chance to step out of your comfort zone for a refreshing experience! Once you get to the independent program, you will certainly enjoy the most satisfying kitesurfing immersion as it allows you to get the full experience of the sport. Hang Loose kitesurfing lessons must be at the top of your list of things to do in Mauritius for your next holidays - It sure is on ours!
