A short and interesting visit that you can do is the Martello Tower, By the parking of La Preneuse Beach, in the west of the island. It has been refurbished in the late 1990s and transformed into a museum. The tower was built while the island was a British colony for protection. With its round structure and very thick walls it was resistant to canon fire. The Tower has basement, upper floor and the roof and the Ground floor currently serves as an entrance. Once you get there, you can explore the tower from its interiors where you can see the powder store containing some bullets and cannonballs that had been found in the area. Various artifacts such as the model ship of ‘La Preneuse’, the ship after which the beach is named. This is fun as you can press red buttons to light up different places of the ship to show the emplacement of the anchor, captain’s cabin, etc. A very informative visit on the daily living of people in the olden times. You can visit this at La Preneuse in Black River.
